Student of the month for March 2023!
Congratulations to Yuqian Shi, our student of the month for March 2023! Yuqian started at Carolina Martial Arts Center in September 2022 with his five year old daughter, Yunmiao! He is 34 years old and works as a Strategy Consultant for Pharma and Biotech. He has a PH.D in biochemistry. He started training to find a balance between the mental and physical, which is customary in the Chinese culture. He learned kung fu in grammar school and formally started training in Goju-ryu, kendo, and judo when he was 16, all while living in China! His training stopped when he came to Durham to study at Duke. After finding CMAC he started training again. He really likes the practical self-defense (bunkai) we teach in class and all the different katas and sparring and weapons. Outside of karate class, he enjoys reading, travel, woodworking, archery, marksmanship, and spending time with family & friends. His favorite food is Hui Guo Rou 回锅肉 (Twice-cooked pork). Yuqian says, “How I wish I knew CMAC during my Ph.D. so I never stopped training in Karate! I’m grateful I have the opportunity to continue my Karate journey with Sensei, and I’ll push myself hard to catch up, Osu!” He recently won 2 gold medals at the AAU state championships and is very active in classes! He also assists with the beginner kid’s karate classes! Great job!
